Community Sew Day Rocks!!
The Giving Quilt, Inc. and Families Helping Families, two Baton Rouge area non-profits, held a community sew day on Oct. 24, 2015 to create “weighted quilts” for local autistic children.
These special quilts have channels filled with small rocks that add weight and provide comfort to children with autism spectrum disorders. The weight of the quilt needs to be proportional to the weight of the child so there is an ongoing need to create a larger and heavier quilt as the child grows. The weight is provided by something similar to aquarium gravel and is machine washable. Commercially weighted quilts are expensive but are not difficult to make.
The Giving Quilt, Inc. provided partially-sewn kits, pre-measured rocks, door prizes and lunch. Fabric and sewing assistance were provided by members of Wasted Women. Members of Families Helping Families were on hand to assist throughout the day.
Twenty- one volunteers attended and a great time was had by all. Families Helping Families received a collection of 21 quilts, lap pads and neck wraps for local autistic children. If your group is interested in learning more about this project contact Candy Bergeron at 225-936-2238.
